Patanjali’s Yoga and Chakra Meditation
February 13-14, 2021. 2pm - 4pm (PST)

This course will begin with an outline of the eight stages of yoga as outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. It will then focus on stages four and five of Patanjali’s system.

Stage four of Patanjali’s Yoga is called pranayama, the control of breath. This course will examine the concept of breath and how it is interpreted in chakra meditation. Stage five of Patanjali’s Yoga is called pratyahara, control of the senses. This course will outline what this means, and what its manifestations are. After we have gained an understanding of pranayama and pratyahara, we will apply them to the practice of chakra meditation. More specifically, to meditation on the heart chakra.

It is our hope that students will gain insights into Patanjali’s theory of meditation in general, and how this theory applies to chakra meditation in particular.

Tantric Theory and Chakra Meditation
February 20-21, 2021. 2pm to 4pm (PST)

Tantric texts describe the creation of the world and of human beings, and they describe the process of liberation from suffering. Chakras are an integral part of these Tantric theories. This course will present the fundamental ideas of tantric theory such as Shiva, Shakti, and chakras. And it will present the basics of chakra meditation. The chakras are seven centers of energy and consciousness that control different aspects of our physical health, emotions, and mental attitudes. All of these chakras are arranged within the brain and spine, they are the focus of chakra meditations. After explaining the basic functions of the chakras, we will explore two complementary techniques of chakra meditation.

The basic knowledge of chakra function brings an ever changing and exploratory element to a yogi’s meditation practice. It helps the practitioner understand and effectively deal with the emotional and mental phenomena that meditation provokes.
